SHARONVILLE — Ross High School’s girls volleyball team captured its second consecutive Division III district championship Saturday, defeating Butler 25-18, 24-26, 25-13, 25-16 at Princeton High School.
The Rams (23-2) advanced to face Southwestern Buckeye League rival Bellbrook in a regional semifinal Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Lakota East High School.
Here are five takeaways from Ross’ district championship victory:
1. Team chemistry fuels Ross’ success
Junior setter Mya Bosse believes the Rams’ biggest strength isn’t necessarily their talent, but the relationships they’ve built throughout the season.
“Every single girl gets along, and I think that plays a huge role in teams,” Bosse said. “People think it’s only the physical side, but I think the mental side, being together, being close with each other, helps a lot.”
That chemistry has helped Ross navigate a 23-win season and return to regional competition.
2. Rams show resilience after second-set setback
Ross appeared in control after taking the opening set 25-18, but Butler battled back to win the second 26-24.
The Rams responded with a dominant 25-13 third-set victory before closing out the match 25-16.
“They’re tough. They’re resilient,” Ross coach Conner Robinson said. “They know the game, they can execute a game plan, and I feel like that’s what it came down to.”
3. Aggressive serving makes the difference
Robinson identified serving as one of the biggest factors in Ross’ victory.
The Rams consistently pressured Butler’s serve receive, forcing their opponent into difficult offensive situations.
“We wore them down, especially with our service today,” Robinson said. “We got them scrambling a lot in serve receive, and that was kind of our focal point.”
4. Ross checks off another preseason goal
The Rams entered the season determined to capture a conference championship and return to the regional tournament.
They’ve accomplished both.
“This is kind of what we’ve been building for all summer long,” Robinson said. “Our goals were to win a conference title, and we’ve done that. To win a district title, to get ourselves back in regional. So we’ve done that.”
Robinson also credited the commitment of all 15 players, including those who contribute primarily during practice.
5. Familiar opponent awaits in regional semifinal
Ross’ postseason journey continues against SWBL rival Bellbrook, with a berth in the Division III regional championship at stake. Ross and Bellbrook split the series during the regular season.
The Rams have already captured consecutive district titles, but Bosse believes there’s more to accomplish.
“Everyone has doubted us, and we proved everyone wrong,” Bosse said. “We’re ready to go further.”
