LIBERTY TWP. — Faced with a daunting task of taking on seemingly invincible Seton, the Fairfield High School volleyball team battled Saturday at Lakota East High School.
Seton, the two-time defending state champion, continued its season with a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 straight-set win, improving to 24-0.
1. Seton is really, really, really good
The Saints have won the past two state titles and have now won 78 of their last 80 matches.
Seton hasn’t dropped a match since September 2024, rolling to a 28-0 mark last year and now stands 24-0 after beating Fairfield.
Seton is loaded with height, skill and seems to have video game accuracy with its passing.
Charley Moeddel leads the Girls Greater Catholic League in kills and just dominates the net, but opponents also have to take into account senior Kenna Meibers and a whole host of hitters.
“It speaks volumes to the excellence of Seton’s program,” Fairfield coach Jessi Grimes said. “I mean, for years they have been excellent and there is no drop-off.”
2. Fairfield gets a medal
Grimes was overjoyed her team battled through a tough season, earning a Division I district runner-up medal.
Fairfield finished the season 10-14 but had a huge win over Lakota West in the previous round to advance.
“That is the story of the season,” Grimes said of the medal. “It is great for the kids. They worked hard and we are young, but we grew a lot over the season. It is exciting.”
3. Peyton Smith is a leader
One of three seniors on the team, Peyton Smith said she has no regrets about her senior season.
Smith is the Indians’ lone first-team All-Greater Miami Conference performer and displayed something for the underclassmen to emulate with her play all year.
“We had to do a lot of team bonding and help the underclassmen,” Smith said. “We wanted them to understand what our true legacy is.”
“It was a good season. We had a lot of growth over the season.”
4. FHS is young
Fairfield has a good core returning with four freshmen and four sophomores on varsity.
Grimes said the team will only get better after experiencing some tournament success.
“There were some slow starts this season, but I am extremely proud of the way the girls dug deep and battled,” Grimes said. “We are very young with four freshmen on varsity. I am very excited for the future. This will build momentum for next season.”
