The battle for supremacy in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference between the Anderson Raptors and Kings Knights went to Anderson last week.
The Knights (4-1, 3-1 ECC) have another conference test tonight on the road against Lebanon (4-1, 3-1 ECC).
Last Friday, stopping an Anderson attack that leads the ECC with 495 yards a game was going to be no small task, and for a quarter and a half, the Knights were up to the challenge.
Kings went ahead 10-7 with just over nine minutes to go in the second quarter, and Anderson went on to score 28 unanswered points to take firm control of the game.
“It was big plays,” Kings coach Alex Garvin said. “We’ve played these guys a lot. We know what they’re capable of.”
“We just didn’t feel like we were the type of defense to sit back in a zone and let it come to us. So we went aggressive.”
Stopping Anderson is rough enough but keeping up with the Raptors on the scoreboard isn’t easy either. The Raptors not only lead the conference in offense but they also lead the ECC in defense as well.
“So they really limited the run game, which I mean, hats off to them — they’ve been doing that to us for a couple years making us beat them with the pass,” Garvin Added.
“We felt like we had a couple good passes that were available, but when they bring that much pressure to stop the run, they also simultaneously are bringing pressure on a quarterback. So it’s a good scheme.”
Kings is led by senior quarterback Grant Nurre, who has thrown for 835 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 222 yards and five more scores.
Defensively, senior linebacker Josh Cassio has 25 tackles — including a sack and 5.5 tackles for loss.
