The Greater Miami Conference is celebrating six decades of competition, championships and community across southwest Ohio.
Founded in 1966, the GMC marks its 60th anniversary in 2026, recognizing a history that has grown from a collection of neighboring schools into one of Ohio’s most accomplished high school athletic conferences.
The league was created with a goal of providing strong competition while using athletics to develop student-athletes and strengthen connections between its member schools and communities.
Sixty years later, the numbers tell part of that story.
GMC schools have combined to win 76 Ohio High School Athletic Association team state championships and 217 individual state titles, building a tradition of success particularly at the Division I level.
That success has stretched beyond Ohio.
Conference programs have appeared in final national rankings in football, boys and girls basketball, girls soccer, softball and baseball. GMC athletes have also captured individual national championships and earned high school All-American recognition.
The conference’s influence has continued long after athletes played their final high school games.
Former GMC standouts have gone on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s golf and baseball.
Others have reached the international stage.
GMC alumni have represented the United States at the Olympic Games in men’s swimming and wrestling, adding another chapter to a league history that has produced athletes capable of competing at the highest levels of their sports.
But the conference’s 60th anniversary is about more than championships and individual accomplishments.
It also recognizes the generations of coaches, administrators, teachers, families and communities that have helped shape the GMC since its formation. Rivalries have developed across decades, while generations of student-athletes have represented their schools in many of southwest Ohio’s most recognizable athletic programs.
Those connections remain at the heart of the conference as it enters its seventh decade.
The schools and faces have changed throughout the GMC’s history, but its emphasis on competition, academic pride, sportsmanship and community has remained.
The 60th anniversary provides an opportunity to recognize that past while looking toward what comes next — more athletes, more rivalries and more milestones added to a history that began in 1966.
After six decades, the Greater Miami Conference’s foundation remains rooted in the tradition that helped build it: a proud past, a strong present and a future shaped by the generations still to come.
