FRANKLIN — Doc Wieland was notified by people in his circle about the Fenwick High School baseball coaching job hitting the market.
He didn’t hesitate to go after it.
“I just thought it would be a great opportunity,” Wieland said. “I went through the process to get it the best I could.
“I was really excited when it opened, and I was even more excited when I actually ended up getting it.”
Wieland was named Fenwick’s next baseball coach on Wednesday.
Wieland takes over for Rob Goodale, who stepped down from his coaching duties after two seasons at the Falcon helm to fully commit to family life as he and his wife are expecting their first child this summer.
The Falcons celebrated a record-setting 2025 season that included their first district championship and first regional semifinal appearance in over a decade. Fenwick finished 15-11 overall and 5-5 in the Greater Catholic League Coed this past season.
The Falcons capped off 2025 by winning nine of their last 10 games.
“To see that team and the players and the progress they made,” Wieland said, “it was just great to see that improvement. They were really playing good baseball at the end of the year.
“To understand the guys and the core coming back next year, it definitely made it easier when you’re potentially taking over a team,” Wieland added. “These guys want to compete for championships.
“When I started the interview process, it was very welcoming from the administration. A lot of people were reaching out to me, and it continued to feel right. They care about the kids, but they also made it very apparent they want to win at a high level. That was really attractive to me.”
Wieland, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience across high school, elite club and national platforms, was selected from a competitive pool of 32 applicants.
“A proven leader in player development, Wieland’s resume is unmatched,” Fenwick’s athletic department said in a statement.
Wieland most recently served on the varsity baseball coaching staff at Lakota East, where he was instrumental in player development, offseason training and varsity scouting.
Wieland also played a major role in the success of the nationally renowned Midland Baseball program. He coached 84 MLB draft picks, guided seven first-rounders, mentored 17 current or former Major Leaguers and won seven consecutive regional titles from 1999 to 2005.
As head coach at Wyoming High School from 2002 to 2004, Wieland led his teams to three straight Cincinnati Hills League titles, with top five city rankings and a team GPA over 3.0. He was a three-time CHL Coach of the Year.
Wieland also coached the Winton Woods baseball team in 2011.
Fenwick athletic director Kyle Longworth said Wieland is a perfect fit for the program’s mission.
“Coach Wieland’s track record, combined with his deep understanding of player development and his commitment to character-based coaching, made him the clear choice,” Longworth said. “After our run to Regionals, we needed a leader who could continue that momentum and elevate Fenwick Baseball to a new level. Doc brings that and more.”
Wieland, who has been a building teacher at Lakota East High School for 12 years, said his passion has always been coaching.
“It feels comfortable, and it feels right,” he said. “The welcoming of the Fenwick parents, the players, the administration, it’s felt right.”
